Our next meeting is Tuesday, July 14 at 7PM. This will be another virtual program on Zoom, as we are still unable to hold regular meetings at the Senior Center. Information on how to join the presentation will be sent out by email before the meeting.
Our program is:
Why is This Mineral Here? Making Sense of Connecticut’s Varied Collecting Localities. By Harold “Fritz” Moritz
Back in the 20th century, there were privately published, spartan field guides with hand-drawn maps and flawed mineral lists or hard-to-obtain government publications to aid with collecting minerals. There was very little information on why the minerals were present at a particular place. We typically relied on other club members’ guidance to find and try to understand what we were looking for. Those days are, thankfully, gone forever because today’s tools include on-line mapping and databases like macrostrat.org and mindat.org that can be mined and combined with the latest geological research to present a much clearer picture of where, when, which, and why minerals occur where they do. Using maps, data, and mineral images, that’s what I am going to show you!
Fritz is a longtime club member and avid collector. And his programs are always informative and entertaining. Please plan to join us for this talk. Hope to “see” you there!
